The wildlife

An absolute paradise for wildlife enthusiasts

Fed by the nutrient-rich Benguela Current and supported by nature preservation, St Helena Bay overflows with biodiversity.

The villas overlook one of the most popular bays for whales to visit and calve in its calming waters. From August to November, the Southern Right Whales come into the bay to calve and can be viewed. While dolphins are found in large numbers at any time chasing the waves, in the neighboring bays.

St Helena Bay is a birdwatcher's paradise and being at the southern point of the migratory route from Europe and the Steppes of Russia makes it a must-visit spot for birdwatchers. While after good winter rains, the veld comes alive with the vibrant colors of spring flowers.

The town

Atmospheric town with a vibrant culture

St Helena Bay is one of the world's principal fishing centers which is now the livelihood of many locals. In winter, snoek is caught and the harbor is a bustling hive of activity, as the fish are sold direct off the boats. Take this opportunity to enjoy the local sleight of hand as they "vlek" snoek and the quirky, humorous vernacular.

The hilltops can be seen peppered with white Portuguese-influenced houses, and has a history of being the first safe haven for Vasco Da Gama on 7 Nov. 1497, during his pioneer voyage from Europe to India.

Enjoy a 20-minute scenic drive along the coast to the neighboring town of Patenoster or through lush farmlands to Velddrif for more cultural exploration.
